Colliers Men Div 3 in Season Opener
September 21st, 2015
S.L.B.A Div 3
Colliers Div3 Men played their first fixture of the new season, an away game against Glasgow Fever.
After a positive pre-season, with high levels of commitment at training, positive additions to the squad and competitive performances in the recent pre-season tournament, the Colliers disappointed by not playing their best in their first competitive game of the season.
A sluggish start on offence and defence gave Fever an early lead and put Colliers on the back foot for the rest of the game. The Colliers team is at its best when it’s playing at a high tempo, moving the ball early and attacking the basket. Unfortunately, over dribbling and not dealing well with Fevers defensive pressure got the Colliers out of rhythm and they found it hard to consistently establish their style of play throughout the rest of the game.
The Colliers biggest concern was at the defensive end. Turning the ball over early on offence and poor communication on the defensive end gave Fever too many easy opportunities that they capitalised on. Colliers ultimately allowed a capable and competitive Fever team to score 97 points.
Throughout the game the Colliers managed to play the way they want to on offence only sporadically, though they did show flashes of good inside scoring and up-tempo fast break basketball ultimately scoring 55 points. Last season the Colliers were able to play strong defence and win games scoring 55 to 60 points but with their defence failing them they suffered a heavy defeat.
Head Coach Derek Milligan commented: “the team and I are disappointed not to have given our best in the first game of the season.”
“We have high expectations for this season: for both the way we play and the composure we play with.
“I am however confident in the guys’ ability to bounce back.
“I’ve no doubt that training will be particularly intense and competitive next week as we work towards giving a better account of ourselves in our next game.
“It’s a home game and hopefully we’ll be bolstered by some support from Colliers fans cheering us on.”
Final score: Colliers 55 - 97 Fever
