Colliers Senior Woman Secure the League title!
SL Colliers vs Glasgow Fever 1
March 5th, 2015 @ Hillhead High School
SLBA Senior Women
The Colliers senior woman had yet to play Glasgow Fever 1 this season and they looked to be the Colliers main contenders for the league title as they have been a force to be reckoned with over the past few season in the Strathclyde Basketball League as they had won the league and cup last season.
The Colliers got off to a great start in the first quarter setting the pace for the game with Alison McCusker, Rhona Mitchell & Joyce Carey all pushing the ball on offence. It proved a hard tempo for the Fever team to match. This allowed the Colliers team to open up a 17-7 lead after the first quarter.
The Colliers continued to do a great job in the second quarter as they were firing on all cylinders. Fever did well on offense moving the ball as a team trying to get it inside and making the Colliers work.
However the Colliers defence has much improved over recent games as they were communicating better and helping each other more. This contributed to the Colliers extending their lead to 20 points by the end of the second quarter. Halftime Score: SL Colliers 37 - Fever 17
At the start of the half Fever made a change defensively moving into a 2-3 zone in an attempt to slow the game down and make life harder for the Colliers, which it did. The Colliers found it harder on offence to find the open shot, which led to, some easy steals for the Fever team.
The Colliers kept up a great defensive effort and with some excellent rebounding from Kara Gough & Jennifer Lynn they managed to hold Fever to just 4 points in the 3rd quarter.
The Colliers went into the 4th quarter up by 27 and it looked like the game was all over but the Colliers didn't want to take any chances and kept up the great team effort that had got them the lead in the first place.
Fever didn't let up either, as they were still being aggressive on offence looking to claw back at the Colliers lead. However the gap proved to be too much in the end and the Colliers came out on top.
Final Score: SL Colliers 61 - Fever 33
Team Captain Alison McCusker commented: "Tonight's game was a culmination of the hard work, effort and determination that we have put in all season. It was the best team performance we've had so far this season and we proved that we deserve to be league champions."
Going into this game Fever’s record was 8-2 and Colliers were 11-0, and with the Colliers only having two more league games left this win secured the league title for the Senior Women in their second season in the league.
The Colliers now look on to face Glasgow University on the 8th of March in the semi finals of Strathclyde Cup at Duncanrig Sports Centre, 8:15pm tip off.
LETS GO COLLIERS!!!
