Junior women seal the win in last minute!

SLBA U18 Women

March 7th, 2016 - The under 18 girls continued their strong performance in the Strathclyde League, despite initially struggling against a Fever team that has really improved since the teams last met in November.

The Colliers started the game with both Amy Poulton and Sophie Neilson shooting well, however Colliers struggled on the defensive end and allowed K. Toland to score 10 points for Fever, which meant that they ended the first quarter down 16-13.

The Colliers also struggled to get their rhythm back in the second quarter after a long break between games, however some impressive shooting from Emma Hawthorne and strong hustle defence from Carla Crowther kept them in the game.  The half time score was Colliers 27 – Fever 34.

Collier’s second half performance was much improved on both offence and defence with the team playing better help defence to stop Fever getting easy baskets.  Fever did not score for the first 5 minutes of the second half which allowed the Colliers to take the lead for a few minutes, and even though they won the quarter, Fever ended the third quarter up by 4 points.

The team showed so much determination in the fourth quarter, believing that they could win and really stepping up the defence, allowing their opponents to score only 10 points.

In offence, Valentina Palli and Niamh Shannon controlled the pace and worked well together, scoring 8 and 6 points respectively in the quarter, including 2 clutch free throws each in the last minutes to tie the score and then take the lead with less than a minute left in the game.

The Colliers increased the defensive pressure and did not allow Fever to score again, holding on to their lead and earning the win!

Top scorers were Niamh Shannon with 15 points and Valentina Palli with 14 points.

FINAL SCORE:   SL Colliers 60 – Glasgow Fever 58
