U14 girl’s Tournament Success

Deans Community High School, Livingston

September, 6th 2015

The Collier’s u14 girls had their first test of the year competing in the West Lothian Wolves under 14 Basketball tournament.

Up against two well-established clubs (Wolves and City of Edinburgh Kool Kats) the Colliers knew they'd be pushed to the limit, however at the start of their first game against Kats, it was Colliers who set the tempo of the game with their fast break offence and tenacious full court defence.

Building a big lead early on saw plenty of action from the Colliers bench and with everyone in the game.

Coach Ross Hutton commented: "every one of our players contributed on both ends of the floor which made it tough for Kats to find a weakness.”

“It's exactly what we have been working on over the past two years and now the girls are playing at a different level."

The colliers ran out clear winners 57-15.

The second and final game against the Wolves, the emphasis was on communication on defence and fast break offence. The Collier’s fast break was terrific to watch and was too quick for the Wolves to deal with and their ball movement and decision making was exceptional.

The Colliers were leading 20-4 after the first quarter and in full control of the game however Wolves fought hard and managed to bring the score back to 12 points at one stage. However, the Colliers stepped up another gear and took the lead back out to 20 and won convincingly.

Coach Ross Hutton commented: “thank you to West Lothian Wolves for hosting us.”

“I am happy with the way we played and I’m excited about playing division one basketball this year.

“It’s going to be a challenge but after working with these girls for two years now I know they are more than capable.“

The U14 girls (who make up all but 3 of the U16 team) are competing in a three-team tournament on Sunday in Bathgate, and soon after, they embark on their first division one National League game season.
