SL Colliers vs St Mirren

SLBA U16 Boys

March 14th, 2016 - The Colliers knew they were in for a tough game after previously losing to St Mirren 79-50 however were determined to make a better showing this time around. They knew they had to work much harder on defence and contain St Mirren's best player, as well as work together in order to create easy scoring opportunities.

The first quarter was a lively affair. With very little stoppages in play both teams were giving 100%, Louis Lennox-Devion anchoring the defence and Alfie Memmot carrying the Colliers on the offence end. Finishing only 5 points down the Colliers knew they were in with a chance.

Great man to man defence from both Andrew Arrol and Andrew Reid limited St Mirren's number 9 to far fewer points than last time, this being one of the main factors in the Colliers step up in performance.

A season high from Alfie Memmot and Alex Blair (30 and 16 points respectively) allowed the Colliers to come within 3 points of the lead with 3 minutes to go. The game was there to be won however some costly mistakes allowed St Mirren to pull away and see out the match.

Coach Ian Rae commented: “I am bitterly disappointed for the boys, they really stepped up tonight and matched that team all the way.”

“It was just in the crunch time that we let ourselves down but this is a learning experience for all of them and we'll use it to motivate ourselves for next year when entering the national league.

“We proved tonight just how much we have improved, both collectively and as individuals, if we keep up this level of effort we can have a great end to the season as well as a successful one next year."

FINAL SCORE:   SL Colliers 69 St Mirren 79

The U16s next will take place against Glasgow Storm on the 21st of March 7:15pm at All Saints Secondary.
