Under 18s Girls Show promise in pre-season game
SL Colliers vs Stirling Knights
September 11th, 2015
The game started off well for the Colliers with a 3 pointer from Rachael Tonnar as well as some strong inside play from Rochelle Maclean. Valentina Palli was a spark to the team’s offense in the second quarter, scoring 9 points in that quarter alone.
The team worked on their zone defence late in the half, which allowed the Knights to get a few baskets as they settled into it, and the Colliers ended the half down 12 points, despite a quick 4 points from Abigail Paterson in the last minute. The half time score was Colliers 27 – Knights 39.
The team were set the challenge of bringing the 12-point deficit down to single digits in the third quarter and they did not disappoint. Carla Crowther was excellent on offense and defence, getting multiple steals and running the fast break well with Niamh Shannon in particular.
The girls ended the third quarter only 5 points down. Rochelle and Rachel continued to dominate on rebounds for the Colliers and the team went one point up with around 5 minutes left in the game, however it was not meant to be.
Rachael had an opportunity to tie the game with around a minute to go but after that, the Knights defence shut down our players for the remainder of the game and we were not able to take another shot. Despite the loss, there are a lot of positives to take from this game.
FINAL SCORE: SL Colliers 65 - Stirling Knights 68
Top scorers:
Niamh Shannon with 18
Rochelle Maclean and Valentina Palli with 13
